1991 NCAA Tournament

Lets get talking about the 1991 NCAA tournament!! The year of the Blue Devil!!

Let’s get started in the East Regional in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This region was full of great excitement throughout the entire tournament but we’ll start in the Sweet 16. Eastern Michigan was the sleeper team from this region and made it to the Sweet 16 before they met the Tar Heel from North Carolina who were the number 1 seed in the region. UNC stomped Eastern Michigan.

Temple upset Oklahoma St. in the bottom half of the region. UNC arguably had one of the easiest paths to the Final 4 only having to play a 9 seed as their highest rated seed. They survived Temple’s comeback and were headed to the Final 4.

Next in the Southeast Regional, the Arkansas Razorbacks beat their SEC foe Alabama in a blowout, while Kansas beat down Indiana in a highly anticipated 2 vs 3 seed matchup. The Kansas Jayhawks went on to beat the Razorbacks in the Elite 8 to reach the Final 4 where they would take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in a classic match up of two college basketball titans.

In the Midwest regional in Pontiac, Michigan, the St Johns Red Storm upset the Ohio State buckeyes and Duke Blue Devils beat the UCONN Huskies. Duke and St. John’s faced off in the Elite 8 where Duke beat the Red Storm in a 17 point blow out. Duke was now back in the Final 4 for the second consecutive year.

It was chalk in the West region as 1 seed UNLV squared off with 4 seed Utah and outlasted the Utes by 17 points. Seton Hall upset the 2 seed Arizona in a great game by 4 points setting up a Elite 8 match up with UNLV. The Rebels went on to beat Seton Hall by 12 points setting up a final 4 match up that is a rematch of the finals the season before with the Duke Blue Devils.

In the final 4 the Kansas Jayhawks knocked off UNC and the Duke Blue Devils knocked off UNLV in a rematch of the finals.

In the finals the Blue Devils knocked off Kansas by 7 points and Coach K had the Duke program destined for big things to come.
